I graduated from Central Michigan University in 2015 with a Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.). I then traveled out to California to work for Lower Lake High School in Lake County. There I helped start the school’s first marching band, bringing the midwestern marching tradition to wine country. I worked as a teacher for seven years teaching band, choir, general music, guitar, and A.P. music theory. I loved my students and together we built a program that is still going strong today. (One of my proudest accomplishments is that a former student is now teaching in my old position, and doing an amazing job!)

In the years following Covid, I noticed a sharp decline in the morale of staff and students at the school, so I made the incredibly difficult decision to move into school administration. For three years I worked as an assistant principal, but my heart was always in the music room. When my family made the decision to come home to Michigan to raise our son closer to his grandparents, I knew I wanted to get back in the classroom.

I am incredibly grateful that Fowlerville had a music position open as I searched for a way back to teaching. My time here has already been amazing, and I look forward to many more years to come. Go Glads!

Meet Mr. Winright
Junior High School Bands

Hello! My name is Matthew Winright and I am the Director of Bands at Fowlerville Junior High School. This will be my seventh year teaching band and my first at Fowlerville. I will be working with the 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands as well as serving as the Assistant Director of the high school marching band.
I grew up going to school in Ionia. I joined band in 6th grade playing the trumpet and have loved music ever since. I decided in high school that I wanted to be a band teacher. I decided to go to college at Cornerstone to get my bachelor’s degrees in Music Education. Before Fowlerville, I spent the first 6 years of my career teaching K-8 Music/ Band at Mar Lee School in Marshall Mi. I am happy to bring my talents, passion, and love of music to the Fowlerville community.

My household consists of my wife and I and our two cats. We currently live in Eaton Rapids but could certainly see moving closer to the Fowlerville area in the next few years. In my free time, I still love being a musician. I lead the music at my church, play trumpet in the Charlotte Community Band and play guitar in the Charlotte Community Jazz band. Outside of music, I love watching sports. My favorite teams are the Lions, Michigan Wolverines, Red Wings, and Tigers.

I have loved teaching in  Fowlerville community and I am looking forward to the rest of this school year! If you would like to contact me for any reason, please email me at [email protected] Glads!!
