Meet the Directors

Meet Mr. Vliek
Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, History of Rock 'n Roll, Ukulele and Songwriting

Picture
Hello, everyone. My name is Bill Vliek and this fall will mark my tenth year as Director of Bands at Fowlerville High School. At Fowlerville, I am in charge of the high school band  programs, as well as the teacher for "The History of Rock 'n Roll", and "Ukulele and Songwriting". Prior to working in Fowlerville, I was Director of Bands at Springport Schools in Springport, Michigan.

Educationally, I hold two degrees from Michigan State University. I graduated with my bachelor's degree in Music Education in 2005. In 2011, I completed my master's degree in Teaching and Curriculum. The focus of my master's degree was educational technology, an area I'm very passionate about. During my degree, I focused on integrating new web tools to address problems of practice, ranging from increasing students musical creativity to expanding opportunities to write across the curriculum.

Personally, I live in East Lansing with my wife and two sons. We are also the proud owners of a 4-year-old, gold, labradoodle. In my spare time (which does not come very often), I enjoy golfing, distance running, and cycling. I also enjoy cooking and reading, especially the fiction of Michael Chabon, Salman Rushdie, Philip Pullman, and Agatha Christie.

If you would like to contact me, please feel free to do so through the band's email or through the school email system (vliekw@fowlervilleschools.org). I look forward to a very successful year in the Fowlerville bands; full of hard work and continually raised standards. If you attend one of our performances, please don't hesitate to say "hi". Go Glads!!!

Meet Mr. Roltsch
Junior High School Bands

Picture
Hello! My name is Josh Roltsch and I am the Director of Bands at Fowlerville Junior High School. This will be my seventh year teaching band in Fowlerville. I teach the 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands at the Junior High and serve as Assistant Director of the marching band.

I graduated from Michigan State University in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education and in 2019, I completed my master's degree in Educational Technology from Central Michigan University. During my time at MSU,  I was an involved member in the Spartan Marching Band, serving as Baritone Section leader in my last year (Go Green!).

My interests in music span across the board from performing to creating and I love to incorporate many different aspects of music in my classes. I think part of being a music teacher is spreading my passion for music both in and outside the classroom.

Personally, my wife, son and two dogs live in Howell and have love being a part of the Fowlerville community. Some other things that interest me on my spare time include spending quality time with my family, board gaming, tabletop RPGs, creating music with my band, and watching Spartan Athletics.

This next year in the Fowlerville Bands is one that holds a lot of potential and I cannot wait to build off of our recent success! It has been great to see the growth of the program in the past few years. Do not hesitate to contact me through at roltschj@fowlervillleschools.org and please say hello if you are seeing me for the first time. GO GLADS!!

Meet Ms. Boynton
Student Intern Teacher

Picture
Hello everyone! My name is Marissa Boynton and I will be student teaching at Fowlerville this fall. I will be working alongside Mr. Vliek at Fowlerville High School, as well as assisting with the 6th grade band at the Junior High.

I graduated from Michigan State University in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education. While at MSU, I worked at the MSU community music school as an early childhood educator, as well as worked as a TA for the MSU math department. I also performed in multiple ensembles as a clarinetist!
Personally, I currently live in Okemos with my cat, Mister. In my free time, I enjoy cooking, running, and scrapbooking. I also love off-roading and camping and spend a lot of time in northern Michigan with my family.

I am very excited to be a part of this community and look forward to this upcoming year. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at boyntonm@fowlervilleschools.org or say “hello” if you haven’t already! Go Glads!
